Memories of a great Scuba Club

Introduction

TRANSVAAL SUB-AQUA was a sports club for underwater activities that focuses on Scuba Diving. It was a non-profit organization, owned by its members, providing them with training, club facilities and a forum to arrange excursions with the peace of mind that accompanies diving, camping, sharing and adventuring with familiar friends.

Background

TSA had a clubhouse on the southern shore of Cinderella Dam, Boksburg. It was an extremely active club with membership peaking over 100. Then crime took control and efforts to protect itself from theft and vandalism took its toll, and the clubhouse was abandoned. For a short while, TSA made use of the facilities of the Scout Hall in Impala Park, but eventually membership waned and the club ceased to physically exist. Some of the members still keep in contact.

This website preserves the memories, stories and photos of TSA's golden years.

Our Mission

To teach and develop underwater skills, to promote safety and environmental consciousness and to enjoy practicing these skills and policies in responsible and co-operative company.

Club Profile

Transvaal Sub-Aqua was founded in 1966 when there was limited experience in Scuba Diving in South Africa. Equipment was scarce and expensive, so the early members needed to club together to gather the necessary expertise and share in the costs of compressors, etc.

Most of our members were qualified divers. There were also well qualified instructors, specialty divers, novices and social members. Our club was managed by a Committee that was elected annually by its members.

TSA supported the standards of CMAS (Confederation Mondiale des Activites Subaquatiques - the World Underwater Federation). Most of our instructors were registered with CMAS Instructors South Africa.
